Good-quality make-up needn’t cost a fortune, says Sonia Haria. And she has the proof
The high street is a wonderful thing. Quite apart from providing an excellent source of quick bargains, it is also a great place to hunt down worthy beauty finds. You don’t always need to pay top dollar for great make-up. I think Topshop’s is some of the around, all reasonably priced at around the £10 mark and much more grown-up than you might imagine ( just avert your eyes from the glitter pots and go straight to the lipsticks – there are always a couple of them in my make-up bag). And although Primark isn’t my first stop for a quick fashion buy, the aisles are actually pretty well-stocked with beauty products. It has just launched a range called My Perfect Colour: it’s a large collection of complexion products including foundations, concealers and BB creams, all available in 16 different shades. Considering the starting price is £2, I’m impressed by the quality.
Another good haunt for beauty products on the high street is H&M. With such low prices, you’d imagine the packaging would leave much to be desired, but the Scandicool casing is chic and there’s always something I want to add to my make-up collection. It’s just launched a range of gel nail varnish top coats, which offer a long-lasting glossy finish.
If you don’t mind spending a few extra pounds and are in the market for something a bit more luxurious, head to the beauty shelves at & Other Stories. The bath and body products, in particular, rival far more expensive brands. The Tangerine Body Oil is seriously refreshing and soothing, and well worth its £12 price tag.
I’m also very excited to hear that Asos is launching its own-brand beauty range tomorrow. The site, which already sells masses of products by the likes of The Ordinary and Ciaté, saw a gap in the market for bright, fun, inexpensive make-up. Check out the vibrant matt lipsticks, chubby sticks and contouring palettes.
I love the liquid eyeliner, which for £6 has an excellent formula and brush. And the best thing? You can order it from the sofa and have it through your letterbox the next day.
This offers light, buildable coverage in a great range of shades.
