This could be the most exquisite tiny banqueting house in the whole of England. The Banqueting House at Gibside, near Newcastle, has one double room (with two single beds in the living room) and costs £956 for seven nights, £1,904 for 10, from December 23, through The Landmark Trust (01628 825920;marktrust. It was built in 1746 to stand at the highest point of the estate, overlooking an octagonal pool and the Derwent Valley. The Trust found it roofless, half collapsed and shrouded in trees, and restored it. Keep warm with a solid fuel stove. The setting is grand but the living is simple.
