Calendar. The picture voted the judges’ fun of the festive street parties which take place on the three evenings before the procession. From dusk to late evening, the streets of downtown Kyoto are thronged with people, many dressed in colourful yukata (light cotton kimonos), as they admire the exquisitely-crafted floats on display in the traffic-free streets. There was much merriment as we strolled along with the flow, nibbling on grilled chicken and battered octopus in the balmy evening air, and enjoying the floats and the music. MARTIN NUTTALL, CAMBRIDGE to me. I lob it back to the bowler and long to play. It feels 20 years too late.

I roam the markets, eat aloo chaat, and talk with people at the food stand who recommend I see a Hindi film. Dialogue passes me by, but boy-meetsgirl is familiar in any culture.

Rain forces me back to the city. The angry rivulets on the road add a new dimension to the journey. I am soaked through. Like everyone else. IAN MILES, ESSEX
