Com­bin­ing hol­i­day time with fitness is one of my favourite ways of go­ing on an ad­ven­ture, writes Scott Lai­dler.

I’ve en­joyed chal­leng­ing hiking and cy­cling breaks close to home in Snow­do­nia, and fur­ther afield in des­ti­na­tions such as Tener­ife and Ibiza, where there are plenty of wa­ter­sports on of­fer such as pad­dle­board­ing and wake­board­ing. I’ve also cy­cled across the moun­tain­scape of Bolzano, Italy, and chanced upon lit­tle­known towns and vil­lages away from the crowds.

Go­ing on a fitness break is a great way to see the best of your sur­round­ings, and, at the same time, boost your me­tab­o­lism and burn calo­ries. So if you want to in­dulge in a feast at a sea­side restau­rant, you’ll have earned it.

Some of the most beau­ti­ful hiking trails in the world are in Hong Kong. Look out for Lion Rock Peak on the MacLe­hose Trail. In Colombia, the Tay­rona Na­tional Park has breath­tak­ing cy­cle trails that take you through forest, jun­gle, hill­side and shore­line.
