Combining holiday time with fitness is one of my favourite ways of going on an adventure, writes Scott Laidler.

I’ve enjoyed challenging hiking and cycling breaks close to home in Snowdonia, and further afield in destinations such as Tenerife and Ibiza, where there are plenty of watersports on offer such as paddleboarding and wakeboarding. I’ve also cycled across the mountainscape of Bolzano, Italy, and chanced upon littleknown towns and villages away from the crowds.

Going on a fitness break is a great way to see the best of your surroundings, and, at the same time, boost your metabolism and burn calories. So if you want to indulge in a feast at a seaside restaurant, you’ll have earned it.

Some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world are in Hong Kong. Look out for Lion Rock Peak on the MacLehose Trail. In Colombia, the Tayrona National Park has breathtaking cycle trails that take you through forest, jungle, hillside and shoreline.
