Arc­tic fox, bearded seal, wal­rus, ivory gull, lit­tle auk Europe’s most northerly town is a func­tional lit­tle place, but that comes with ad­van­tages. It is easy to get around and see am­ple Arc­tic wildlife on land, while at the same time tak­ing all-day boat trips (to the re­search sta­tion at Ny-Ale­sund, among other places) with pos­si­ble sight­ings of bel­uga, minke whale, fin whale and even po­lar bear to com­ple­ment the five tar­get species.

Be­tween boat ex­cur­sions, head west by 4x4 from Longyear­byen, mak­ing for the lit­tle auk colony near Bjorn­dalen. Thou­sands of the birds breed be­low boul­ders on the cliff.
