Vocational training
SIR – Michael Wilshaw, the head of Ofsted, has declared that grammar schools are only “for the few” (report, October 17). He is correct. They are designed for those who are academically gifted. Not everyone is.
However, there is no reason why there should not also be just as many vocational schools, led by employers and the state. Many skills are in high demand, and there could easily be a baccalaureate for secondary schools that combines basic academics with skills such as plumbing, bricklaying and woodwork. Other schools could offer farming and horticultural skills, or training in music, drama and art.
This approach would open up opportunities for all – not just the few. Corina J Poore London SE14
