Make your own house­hold cleaner by in­fus­ing white vine­gar with cit­rus peel, a few sprigs of mint or a cin­na­mon stick – leave in a cup­board for a month, then strain into an empty spray bot­tle.

Neu­tralise the smell of freshly painted walls by cut­ting two onions into quar­ters and leav­ing them cut side up on a plate overnight.

Wash the hard-to-reach corners of glass vases by adding a hand­ful of rice and a large glug of white vine­gar. Swirl briskly.

To pre­vent sil­ver from tar­nish­ing, wrap it in kitchen pa­per and cling film af­ter clean­ing.

Re­move sticky la­bels from glass jars by ap­ply­ing a paste of cook­ing oil and bicarbonate of soda.

Treat scratches on wooden fur­ni­ture by rub­bing them with a wal­nut. The oil of the nut should help them to fade.
