A POLICE officer was knocked unconscious when he was attacked by a gang at a graveyard in Kent.

The officer, who was on duty at the time, was injured in the grounds of St Lawrence Church in Manston Road, Ramsgate, at around 10pm on Friday. The policeman was treated at the scene for a head injury and was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged.

The incident was attended by armed police units and a search of the nearby area was carried out with the assistance of the National Police Air Service helicopter.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “It was reported that one of the people who assaulted the officer may have been in possession of a firearm and armed officers attended the scene as a precaution.”

In a tweet, Kent Police said: “A police officer was knocked unconscious in a graveyard. He has been taken to hospital as a precaution and we are currently carrying out searches to find those responsible.”

So far no arrests have been made and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact officers.
