Mia Madre (2015)
BBC FOUR, 10.30PM ★★★
Nanni Moretti’s lethargic drama is about the impending loss of a parent. Moretti plays Giovanni, the son of a Latin scholar who is slipping towards death. The emotional kernel of the story is drawn from Moretti’s own life: his mother died during the making of his previous film. It’s John Turturro, as an American actor working for Giovanni’s sister, who shines though, with scenes that crackle with wit, energy and invention.
