New Ukip leader vows to step down in 12 months

Ukip’s new leader said he in­tended to re­sign in 12 months as he was in­stalled af­ter an un­con­tested elec­tion.

Ger­ard Bat­ten pledged to try to re­store the party’s for­tunes. The Lon­don MEP said: “As I said at the start of the con­test, if the elec­tion were to be un­con­tested, I would hold of­fice for 12 months. There­fore, I in­tend to re­sign on 13th April 2019 so that a full lead­er­ship con­test may take place.”
