For over 30 years the BBC’s consumer affairs programme has fought the side of the public, ensuring that we know all we need to about everything from faulty electrics to dodgy egg sandwiches. Tonight sees the start of the 39th series and the now established live format shows little signs of flagging as presenters Matt Allwright, Nikki Fox and Steph McGovern report from Salford. The nature of the programme means we don’t know exactly which consumer crimes will feature although the focus continues to be on greater public involvement with viewers encouraged to contact the team with stories they feel should be covered. ITV’s current-affairs strand reveals the results of its year-long investigation in the gastroenterology department of Great Ormond Street Hospital, which has largely stopped taking new referrals. The film asks why, and examines whether the hospital could be more transparent. SH
