Led by Genghis Khan, the Mon­gols were a group of tribes that con­quered all the land from the coast of China in the east, to the Caspian Sea in the west. The Mon­gols may have killed as many as 40 mil­lion peo­ple, but they also cre­ated a postal ser­vice.


The Spar­tans were the most feared and re­spected war­riors in an­cient Greece. From the age of seven, a Spar­tan boy would learn how to fight. To en­cour­age re­source­ful­ness, trainees had to steal their food. If they were caught, how­ever, they were beaten.


The Aztecs lived in what is now Mex­ico, from the 13th cen­tury un­til they were over­thrown by the Span­ish in the 16th. The Aztecs were also en­thu­si­as­tic about hu­man sac­ri­fice. They killed thou­sands of their own peo­ple in grim and grue­some ways – and even ate some.
