Spotify rivals Radio 1

The Week - Junior - - On Screen -

Music-streaming service Spotify is very different from a radio station like BBC Radio 1, but the two are becoming big rivals here in the UK, as Spotify gains more listeners.

The company has just announced that it’s being used by 7.1 million Brits, which is creeping up on the 9.7 million people over the age of 15 who listen regularly to Radio 1.

Including UK users, Spotify now has more than 140 million listeners around the world, including 60 million who pay a monthly subscription for it.

Musicians are enjoying their own big numbers too: 2017’s summer smash, Despacito, has more than 1.6 billion plays on Spotify, and Ed Sheeran’s Shape

of You, with 1.4 billion, isn’t far behind.

The company has more rivals than just Radio 1, though. Apple recently announced that it has 30 million listeners worldwide for its Apple Music streaming service, and Amazon, Deezer and Google are all competing for music fans’ ears as well.

Spotify is on

the rise.
