What is Brexit?

Brexit comes from mix­ing the words “Bri­tain” and “exit” and de­scribes Bri­tain leav­ing the EU. It be­gan to be used a lot in 2016, when the UK held a ref­er­en­dum (a spe­cial vote on an im­por­tant is­sue) on whether the UK should leave or re­main in the Euro­pean Union – a group of 28 Euro­pean coun­tries that work to­gether on issues such as trade, se­cu­rity and hu­man rights.
