The SNP has advised its parliamentarians and activists to adopt a less aggressive and overtly nationalistic approach than they did in 2014, in an effort to win over swing voters, says Ewen Macaskill in The Observer. “A poll this month suggested that a referendum would be decided by a bloc of swing voters, mainly women, relatively well-off and predominantly left-leaning.”
The next real test of opinion will be local council elections in Scotland on 4 May, says Mure Dickie in the FT. The Tories are hoping to benefit from the fact that most Scots have no desire to go through another divisive referendum. But polls suggest the elections will confirm the SNP’S dominance in Scotland.
