Attempted terror attack:

-

France suffered another security scare this week when a man rammed a car filled with firearms and a gas canister into a police convoy on the Champs-élysées, in what the authorities said appeared to be a botched suicide attack. Only the attacker himself was killed, apparently by injuries sustained in the collision and resulting fire. Early unconfirmed reports identified the attacker as a 31-year-old French national from the Paris suburb of Argenteuil, who had been on a terror watch list. France remains in a state of emergency, and security has been particularly tight on the Champs-élysées since April, when a supporter of Islamic State opened fire on a police van, killing one officer. Separately, soldiers in Brussels – which is also on high alert – shot dead a suspected suicide bomber at the city’s Central Station on Tuesday night. The man had set off a small explosion on a busy concourse, but no one was injured.
