Republicans shot:
In what seems to have been a politically motivated attack, a gunman opened fire on a group of Republican politicians as they were practising for a charity baseball game last week at a stadium in Alexandria, a city just across the Potomac River from Washington DC. Four people were wounded, including Steve Scalise, third in line in the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, who was shot in the hip and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition was revised last week from critical to serious. The gunman, who was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police, was identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Illinois – a left-wing political activist with a record of domestic violence.
