No challenge: The founder of a new political party, that was expected to pose a major threat to PM Shinzo Abe’s bloc in Japan’s snap election, has stunned the country by announcing she will not stand in the 22 October poll. This means that Yuriko Koike (pictured) cannot become PM. Instead, she will remain in her powerful post as governor of Tokyo while continuing to build up the Party of Hope, which she launched last week – leading, hours later, to the collapse of the main opposition party, the Democrats.
