Right-wing Republican victory: A hard-right former judge, who has been described as an evangelical Christian “extremist”, won Alabama’s Republican Senate primary last week. Roy Moore’s victory was hailed as a triumph for the anti-establishment conservative base that catapulted Donald Trump to the White House. But paradoxically, it came as a humiliating blow to Trump himself: the president had sided with Republican congressional leaders in strongly backing the defeated candidate, Luther Strange. Moore, however, had the support of Steve Bannon, the former White House strategist who is now back in charge of the alt-right Breitbart news website. Some analysts have described Moore’s victory as the opening salvo in a potential Republican civil war in the run-up to 2018’s midterm elections.
