National anthem law: China’s ruling Communist Party has introduced a new law making it illegal to “disrespect” the national anthem. March of the Volunteers has been China’s anthem since the 1949 revolution, and schoolchildren are obliged to sing it every day. Anyone found guilty of disrespecting the anthem – by, say, changing its lyrics, or playing it at inappropriate occasions, such as funerals or in a TV advertisement – faces up to two weeks in jail.
