The Tories are preparing for sudden by-elections in case MPS are forced to stand down in response to sleaze allegations, reports the FT. With the support of Northern Ireland’s DUP, the Government has an effective majority of just 13, which would be wiped out if the Tories lost seven seats. Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, suggested this week that it would be a “positive thing” if there was a “clearing out” of politicians found to have sexually harassed others.

As for May, says Rachel Sylvester in The Times, the view of Tory MPS is that she has now “used up all her political lives”. The Budget on 22 November is seen as her last chance to seize back the political agenda.
