Spirit of the age

The Royal Court Theatre has reversed its decision to cancel a production of Rita, Sue and Bob Too after being accused of censoring female working-class voices. Last week it had said it would not stage Andrea Dunbar’s comedy drama, about a married man having an affair with his teenage babysitters, because its themes were “conflictual” with the theatre’s new code of conduct.

The managers of two private apartment blocks in Bristol have been criticised for nailing spikes onto tree branches to stop bird droppings landing on residents’ cars. The spikes – which are usually fixed to window ledges – have appeared on trees near Clifton Down. A local councillor said the trees were now “uninhabitable”.
