An Uber driver with a crim­i­nal record has been ar­rested in con­nec­tion with the mur­der of Re­becca Dykes, the Bri­tish em­bassy worker whose body was found be­side a mo­tor­way on the out­skirts of Beirut last Satur­day. The taxi driver has ad­mit­ted to at­tempt­ing to rape the 30-year-old and stran­gling her af­ter she left a bar in Gem­mayzeh, a neigh­bour­hood known for its nightlife, last Fri­day. Her friends said she’d or­dered an Uber to take her home. The driver, Tarek Hesso Harb, was traced from surveil­lance footage, of his car in Gem­mayzeh and on the road where Dykes’s body was found, ac­cord­ing to of­fi­cials. He had pre­vi­ously been jailed sev­eral times for drugs of­fences. How­ever, it re­mains un­clear how he was able to pass Uber’s back­ground checks.
