A politician who less than two years ago was convicted of the sexual abuse of a teenager has been appointed to congress. According to prosecutors, Nelson Nahim, 60, was a regular client of a ring in Rio de Janeiro state that held children captive, drugged them and forced them to have sex. In 2016, he was sentenced to 12 years for submitting a 15-year-old to prostitution/sexual exploitation, rape and intimidating behaviour. He was released on appeal after four months, and insists he will prove his innocence. His appointment has caused disgust in Brazil, a country where hundreds of thousands of children are involved in prostitution. “It provokes nausea and vomit,” read one post on Facebook.
