Fatal mudslides:

The Week - - News | The world at a glance -

At least 15 people were killed on Tuesday when heavy rain triggered mudslides in southern California. After more than 5.5 inches of rain fell in two days in some areas, floodwaters poured down mountainsides stripped of vegetation by recent wildfires, sending a torrent of mud and boulders into the valleys below. Major highways were blocked by tonnes of debris, several houses were swept away and hundreds more were badly damaged. As rescue workers searched the mud and wreckage for survivors, an official in Santa Barbara county compared the devastation to a “World War One battlefield”.
