A pen­sioner has col­lected £47,700 in 5p coins and do­nated them to the hospice in Durham where he works as a vol­un­teer. Since Ian Watt, 70, started col­lect­ing them in 2004, he has amassed al­most a mil­lion 5p coins, with the help of a few friends who look out for them too. Watt takes his haul to St Cuth­bert’s Hospice ev­ery Thurs­day, but keeps a record of his to­tal. He of­ten picks the coins up in the street. “Kids throw them away,” he says. “It’s a coin peo­ple hate.”
