Even though a gov­ern­ment has been formed, spec­u­la­tion con­tin­ues over a pos­si­ble elec­tion later this year. The lat­est polls sug­gest sup­port for the League is run­ning at 28%, 11 points higher than at the elec­tion in March. By con­trast, sup­port for M5S has fallen two points to 30%.

The coali­tion is think­ing of in­tro­duc­ing a “par­al­lel” do­mes­tic cur­rency in the form of small de­nom­i­na­tion trea­sury bills known as mini-bots. These could be used to pay state and wel­fare bills. But Brus­sels fears this will just prove to be a back-door way of fi­nanc­ing deficit spend­ing.
