Even though a government has been formed, speculation continues over a possible election later this year. The latest polls suggest support for the League is running at 28%, 11 points higher than at the election in March. By contrast, support for M5S has fallen two points to 30%.
The coalition is thinking of introducing a “parallel” domestic currency in the form of small denomination treasury bills known as mini-bots. These could be used to pay state and welfare bills. But Brussels fears this will just prove to be a back-door way of financing deficit spending.
