Militants hacked at least seven people to death and burnt down more than 150 houses in a village in northern Mozambique on Tuesday. The attack was the latest in a spate of atrocities in the Cabo Delgado province, and was attributed to a group whose members are believed to have beheaded ten people (including two teenage boys) in an attack on two villages at the end of May. The recent discovery of vast gas deposits off the coast of northern Mozambique is expected to transform the impoverished country’s economy, but there is anxiety in Cabo Delgado that the province will not receive any of the benefits – creating fertile recruiting conditions for extremists.
