talking turkey Paul’s Xmas menu
Deck the malls, the Christmas sandwich season is here. That time where you sink your teeth into fowl sarnies to the background strains of your colleagues arguing about which pub to have their annual department holiday do at.
Paul graciously sent us a selection of its current festive crop to try ahead of their November 6 launch date.
Its Dinde De Noel (£4.65) has, the press release boasts, been voted “best Christmas sandwich” by Time Out for two consecutive years – so it’s nothing new, then.
The bread, as it’s Paul, is excellent but the filling tastes a little tired despite the hint of horseradish to pep things up.
Worse though was the Salade De Noel, a punishing £5.60 on the wallet and a drab collection of ingredients brought together as the “best bits of a Christmas lunch”.
The meat of the bird itself was dry and curiously sparse in a tray dominated too much by grated carrot, sweet potato and red cabbage.
While there was some crunch and the odd burst of sourness from a dried cranberry or two, this was an underperformer for those craving a turkey hit.
Better, perhaps, to save the pennies and use them to fill the gaping hole beneath that tree. Find Paul in Cabot Place
