Wimbledon waits for wildcard Willis

-

MARCUS WILLIS has been handed a wildcard into the qualifying round of the singles draw at Wimbledon.

Willis, 26, shot to fame last year with a stunning run through to the second round proper of the event where he faced 18-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer on Centre Court.

The former Wokingham schoolboy was always seen as a top talent during his junior days, but struggled to break through on the main tour until his memorable run last year.

Now ranked 386 in the world, ‘Willbomb’ will have to win three matches to reach the main draw, three less than he managed to get to the same round last year, after being handed a wildcard entry by the tournament organisers.

Even if Willis fails to make his way through the singles, he will definitely be at SW19 after being given a main draw wildcard into the doubles.

He will team up with fellow Brit Jay Clarke, having never made it through to the main draw of the doubles event of a Grand Slam before.

Wimbledon begins July 3 with Andy Murray looking to defend his men’s singles title.
