The Wokingham Paper - - PROPERTY -

SPECIAL guests praised a £6m development to help older people live independently when they viewed the final phase of work at Woodley.

The Fosters Extra Care Scheme will provide 34 affordable one-bedroom apartments on the site of a former care home.

A party from Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) Holdings Ltd was updated about progress on a tour of the purpose-built complex before it officially opens in the next few months.

Council leader Charlotte Haitham Taylor, said: “Fosters Extra Care Scheme is set to be an incredibly valuable asset.

“It will help older people live independently in their own homes whilst providing a range of communal facilities, including sitting rooms and a large dining room.

“It is so important to provide this type of home and level of support for the health and wellbeing of older people, especially at a time when our population continues to thrive and enjoy longer life expectancies.

“Development of the site has progressed extremely well and we’re looking forward to seeing the first residents move in.”

Apartments in the development in Fosters Lane will include a private balcony or terrace, walk-in wetroom, double bedroom and an open-plan kitchen/living area.

While enabling older people live securely and privately in their own home, extra care will be available if needed.

As well as two sitting rooms and a dining room, communal facilities will include a laundry room and accommodation for guests.

Wokingham Housing (WHL), which is wholly owned by the council, is managing the project in partnership with developer R J Leighfield and Sons Ltd.

Once finished, the scheme will be transferred to WHL’s sister company, Loddon Homes Limited.

The scheme, which is being funded by a mixture of government grant, developer contributions and borrowing, is expected to create up to 30 jobs.

More than 40% of the labour on the site is local. Developer R J Leighfield and Sons Ltd has also had two apprentices and a twoweek school placement student on the site.
