The Wokingham Paper - - SOCIETY - MOLLY CHEESMAN

WELL, what a wonderful week we have had.

It began with our meeting at the Oakwood Centre on Monday, October 2 when we enjoyed a very nostalgic evening as we were taken on a visit down memory lane where we saw through a slide presentation how Reading has changed over the years.

The slides covered the years from the 1960s to the 1990s and showed how Reading had changed with the building of the IDR.

The first part covered Castle

Hill, St Mary Butts, Oxford Road and Hosier Street and we saw the demolition of all the interesting shops that we remembered plus the demolition of a huge amount of pubs, all now replaced by large office blocks and the Ring Road.

Then it was on to Southampton Street, Coley Street, London Street and finally The Oracle.

Then on Friday, 83 of our members had the most wonderful afternoon when we travelled by coach up to the Royal Albert Hall to listen to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra present their tribute to the great British rock band Queen.

Accompanied by a spectacular light show the music began with the famous We Will Rock You which had us all clapping along and this was followed by many of Queens greatest hits which included Barcelona, Bohemian Rhapsody, finishing with We Are The Champions which once again had us all singing along with our arms in the air.

In between the hits, we learnt the history of Queen from its formation to the sad death of Freddie Mercury.

What a wonderful experience to finish off the week.

On Friday, October 13, we will be holding another Table Top Sale at the Centre Stage in Woodley Precinct to raise money for our chosen charity for the year which is the Royal Berkshire Hospital Ultrasound Scanner.

At our next meeting, our speaker will be Richard Bullock who will be talking to us about the Assassination of J.F.K.
