Boars stage emphatic second-half comeback
Fleet Spurs 4 Eversley and California 5
EVERSLEY AND CALIFORNIA completed an emphatic second-half comeback to win a ninegoal thriller at Fleet Spurs.
Trailing 2-1 at the break, Ellis Woods’ men soon conceded again before storming back to claim a 5-4 victory thanks to a late Owen Powell strike.
It looked like a seventh straight defeat could be on the cards for the Boars after a catastrophic opening saw Fleet go ahead inside the opening 10 minutes when Richard Swain headed in.
That lead was doubled on 14 minutes when Ben Greenwood picked up the ball deep in the Boars’ half, drove down the left flank and squared to unmarked Karl Dallaway, who was able to finish from close-range.
Despite going two goals down in quick succession, the Boars didn’t lose their cool and were able to hit back six minutes later. Mo Davies cleverly opened up the home side’s defence, slipping a neat ball through to Josh Sapsed, who ran through one-on-one and drilled his shot past the keeper and into the back of the net.
The second half played out with a similar trend to the first with a goal frenzy in the opening exchanges. One minute in and the Boars were caught sleeping. Mark O’Reilly paced down the left wing, playing it to Greenwood who struck the oncoming ball first time across the keeper and into the bottom corner, making it 3-1.
At the opposite end, Davies was brought down in the box five minutes later - gaining his team a penalty which he then stepped up for and sent the keeper the wrong way, swiftly reducing the deficit once again.
Greenwood then grabbed his second and restored Fleet Spurs’ two-goal lead, but just four minutes later saw the game’s seventh goal as Boars centre-back Ryan Whyte headed down to Brad Brown who hit the crossbar before Clive Akem-Che turned in on the goal-line.
It was then sustained pressure from the Boars and they equalised at 4-4 in the 66th minute with Brown rising highest to nod in.
And the winner duly arrived with nine minutes to play when substitute Powell bundled the ball over the line.
EVERSLEY: Lusty, Dickie, Whyte, Edwards, Akem-Che, Guest, Edwards, Rowland, McCarthy, Sapsed, Davies, Brown. Subs: Shay, York, Wood, Powell, Medhurst.
And Eversley followed it up with another fivegoal showing on Tuesday evening.
The Boars swept aside Godalming Town 5-1 at Fox Lane with a Josh Sapsed hat-trick as well as goals from Mo Davies and Brad Brown.
