17 Skat­ing Rink, Som­er­set House, The Strand, Lon­don WC2R 1LA. The large court­yard of Som­er­set House is trans­formed into an ice rink for skaters to en­joy. Any­one who can’t skate can take lessons and there is a spe­cial sec­tion for chil­dren who can prac­tise with bear skat­ing aids. To 15th Jan­uary. Tel: 020 7845 4600.

18 Christ­mas Mar­ket, Town Hall, Square, North­gate Street, Ch­ester CH1 2HJ. Tra­di­tional wooden chalets will sell a va­ri­ety of fes­tive treats and gifts. Plenty of lo­cally pro­duced food as well as hot choco­late and mulled wine to keep out the cold. To 18th De­cem­ber.

23 Christ­mas at Kew, Kew Gar­dens. Kew, Rich­mond, Lon­don TW9 3AB. A mile­long trail through the fa­mous botanic gar­den lit with more than 60,000 lights. High­lights in­clude a choir of Christ­mas trees, a sparkling tun­nel of light, gi­ant crys­tals, Santa and a spec­tac­u­lar light, mu­sic and wa­ter dis­play in front of the Palm House. More than 60 stalls in both the cas­tle rooms and in a spe­cial mar­quee will of­fer a wide range of fes­tive gifts in­clud­ing home ac­ces­sories, vin­tage wares, chil­dren’s clothes, soaps, can­dles, cards and lo­cally pro­duced food and drink.
