Smoke that drifts like muslin un­der­neath an English sky, As busy en­gines full of steam go puff­ing slowly by, And coun­try sta­tions by the track with lit­tle walls of stone, Have plat­forms full of sum­mer flow­ers to wel­come peo­ple home.

High on the steep em­bank­ment’s fra­grant grass Bright but­ter­flies in coloured clouds are lift­ing, And wild flow­ers nod to all the trains that pass, With bum­ble bees be­tween the bram­bles drift­ing.

And some­times on a silent night be­neath a starry sky, You may hear a phan­tom whis­tle as a mem­ory passes by…
