These magnificent statues are guarding the bridge leading to the south gate of Angkor Thom (meaning ‘Great City’) at the site of Angkor in Cambodia. This was the capital of Buddhist king Jayavarman VII, and here he built his official state temple complex dating to the late 12th or early 13th century. There are 54 statues on either side of the bridge, one side representing the devas or guardian gods and on the other side the asuras or demon gods.
