Many of the refugees who flocked to Geneva from France were ar­ti­sans who helped build Geneva’s rep­u­ta­tion in the 18th cen­tury. They in­cluded watch­mak­ers, jewellers and enam­ellers, like the Barde, Ter­roux and Lio­tard fam­i­lies, and busi­ness dy­nas­ties, such as Boissier, Sel­lona and Cazen­ove, who turned the city into an im­por­tant bank­ing cen­tre.
