Blinded by technology
When I watch golf these days, it makes me wonder if the technological advances have actually enhanced or hindered the sport. I saw Rory unleash a 390-yard drive at the SA Open, and then just days later Justin Thomas won in Hawaii with a 27-under-par total. We all love the idea of driving like the pros, and I’ve seen many a man salivate over all the new clubs from the top brands like a child in a sweet shop. But how many amateurs can really afford £400 for one club and more to the point, would it really make a difference anyway? Surely splashing out on some lessons and nailing the fundamentals are way more important? I much prefer how golf was played 30 years ago when legends like Nicklaus, Watson and Seve would captivate us with their swings, style and personality. These days, talent can appear manufactured because of the advancements in technology. It may look cool, but should we really be seeing guys hit a drive and a wedge on a 500+ yard par 5? I sometimes wish we all played with hickory clubs, at least the real stars would shine again.
