TAYLORMADE

SLDR V 2017 M1

Everyone obsesses about hitting that amazingly long, one-off shot. But what you really need to focus on is your average yardage and dispersion after hitting 14 drives in a round. Keith said he currently uses his driver nine times a round, but I wanted to give him the confidence to use it at least 11 times. That’s why we moved to a lighter shaft with a regular flex to match his swing speed, and positioned the weight at the back of the head to add some forgiveness. The changes we made saw Keith’s landing angle change from 30 degrees to 42.5. The optimum is between 38 and 40 depending on the climate and course you play on. We probably cost Keith a few yards in total distance by settling on a 12° head, but he gained 13 yards of carry – and a lot more accuracy. Once the ground gets harder, Keith can lower the loft on the shaft sleeve so the ball runs out more.
