HANDICAP HORRORS

Today's Golfer (UK) - - FIRST TEE - PAUL CROWTHER

When is England Golf going to introduce a 12-month time lapse before a handicap is increased, rather than just penalising every bad or so-so round by 0.1 every time?

At my club, you can win a county competition (and plenty of cash) and then play rubbish in a handicap qualifier so you get your shots back, ready for the next county competition. These players are using the system to beat it. I am afraid that a proportion of today’s golfers do not see a reduction in handicap as a reflection on how good they are, but see it as a hindrance to their golfing prize funds and will use every method at their disposal to resist a handicap reduction. It is no longer a surprise to see double figures on scorecards, just so players can ‘win back’ their original handicap. For the love of our game, England Golf needs to shut this ‘0.1’ system down because I and many other handicap committee members are being castigated throughout the land.

TG’S Michael Catling found out how tough par 3s can be at Foxhills.
