Hood­ing the face works af­ter a fash­ion be­cause it al­lows the club’s sharp lead­ing edge to dig down un­der the ball. How­ever, to gain height in sand we need to add loft by open­ing the club­face. Open­ing the face also in­creases sole bounce, which stops the club­head dig­ging.
