Meet the new kids on the block
Always pleased to see fresh talent entering the MX-5 tuning world, especially when their products are as beautifully made as those from Davefab. The Dave part of the company name references its two founders, Dave Massey and Dave Nicholls, while Fab is for fabrication.
Started only five months ago, Davefab’s creation was inspired by the 1.8-litre mk1 MX-5 that its founders use as a track toy: with Nicholls’ CAD design skills and Massey’s passion for high quality welding, the pair decided to upgrade the car’s performance using components they developed and fabricated themselves. Their view is that with some MX-5 hardware, modern design and manufacturing techniques allow enhancements not previously possible. And the fruits of their labours were so admired by other enthusiasts, they now sell their parts online.
We briefly stopped in at the Davefab workshop and were hugely impressed with what we saw – the quality of the welding is superb, and a milled aluminium billet collector for the stainless steel exhaust manifold was a thing of beauty. Davefab is in the final throes of producing its own turbocharger kit for the 1.8-litre mk1, using a Borgwarner turbo, Garrett intercooler, Manley conrods, and its own full exhaust system. The expectation is for 300bhp at the wheels.
We’ll be going back to see Davefab once the turbo package is completed and tested.
