The mk4 MX-5 is really starting to catch the attention of the aftermarket and Sheffieldbased Cobra Sport Exhausts has just released a collection of stainless steel exhaust systems to fit it.
Cobra’s collection includes a direct replacement cat-back system with a single tailpipe to one side, a twin-tailpipe with a centre exit, and dual exit twins. The non-standard setups also come with a revised and lowered rear valance to accommodate the new pipe arrangement. The exhausts are made from mandrel-bent T304 stainless steel pipes that are TIG welded.
For further variation there are resonated and nonresonated versions of each system, and Cobra can also supply a de-cat pipe for the secondary catalytic convertor. The latter, used in conjunction with the non-resonated dualexit system, is claimed to give a 7.4lb ft gain in torque and improve the shape of the torque and power curves at lower rpm. As ever with aftermarket exhausts, style and power are part of the promise, and Cobra also says that at a maximum of 88db its systems won’t deafen you, and will pass an MOT.
