Cashmere and canines come together in Brora’s playful new designs
It’s a little-known fact that for the past 12 years, Brora has had a trick up its cashmere sleeve in the shape of Issy Tennant. As a long-standing friend of the founder Victoria Stapleton, she has helped her ponder everything from colourways to the correct number of buttons on a cardigan. ‘As I live so close to Brora’s mill in Hawick, collaborators tend to stay with me whenever they travel up to Scotland,’ says Tennant, who also runs a gilding and decorative-arts business, Tennant & Tennant, with her supermodel sister Stella.
When the London design duo Teatum Jones walked into Tennant’s dog-filled kitchen, they were so captivated by her bohemian life that it became the inspiration for their new Brora collection. Rinkle the Dalmatian has a starring role, appearing on several garments, while a kimono pattern that Tennant was adapting for use on a gilded lamp also features strongly. Nibble the lurcher and Manchicha the Spanish rescue dog sadly didn’t make the cut, but Issy’s daughter suggested the motto ‘Be the person your dog thinks you are’ that is now emblazoned upon a woollen jumper. ‘It was a complete coincidence as she initially came up with it for her school-leavers’ book,’ says Tennant, ‘But we all agree that it sums up the collection perfectly.’ cg www.brora.co.uk
