Long-dis­tance run­ners build ex­tra mi­to­chon­dria – the body’s pow­er­houses – in mus­cles, al­low­ing for longer runs with less ef­fort, say ex­perts at the Univer­sity of South­ern Den­mark. En­durance ath­letes have twice as many mi­to­chon­dria as in­ac­tive peo­ple, help­ing gen­er­ate 25% more en­ergy.
