Casio Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20 watch £450

Casio’s second offering to the world of outdoor smart watches has landed with a splash – which is absolutely fine, as it’s waterproof to 50 metres, even with its built-in microphone. Available in two colour schemes, the Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20 feels virtually bombproof – it boasts a militarygrade construction, meeting the standards prescribed by the durability test established by the US Department of Defense, and it looks the part, too, with its specialoperations-style map faces.

Unfortunately, the battery life didn’t get the memo – it ran down pretty quickly without too much use. The vast array of apps could very well be the cause – users can download outdoor-specific apps such as ViewRanger, and the Casio itself features a low-power GPS system that can be used offline if you download maps beforehand. That in itself is a big bonus for mountaineers and trail runners alike, and you can customise maps by adding markers. The ability to personalise is one of the most appealing features of the new Casio, with alternative watch faces and Activity data displays available. Don’t expect a reinvention of the wheel, but the Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20 will suit serious outdoors folk to a tee.

FACE FACTS With the Casio Pro Trek Smart, you can choose from various face designs to suit your intended activity. The dual-layer display features superimposed monochrome and colour LCDs.
