Men’s and women’s on test

Trail Running (UK) - - Contents -

This tee is made with 87% merino wool spun around a nylon core; this increases durability but keeps a natural fibre against the skin. Merino offers good temperature regulation, doesn’t smell and breathes very well, so it’s a great fabric to run in. It’s cut looser than the other tees on test, which makes it nice to wear casually as well.

This polyester running tee from Swedish brand Salming has a stylish athletic cut and bold, branded graphics. If you like the design then it’s a reasonably priced, lightweight tee, which wicks well and has an open mesh-type construction that helps keep you cool. It feels light and comfortable to wear on its own or as a base layer.

Part of the high-performance RC collection, you’ll see this striking yellow and black race top on Scott’s pro team. Its lightweight polyester/elastane mix fabric is stretchy and smooth, with no hem or cuff seams, so it’s super comfy on its own or under a race vest. £60 is pricey, but it is made in Europe, which guarantees fair manufacturing.

PATAGONIA SS WINDCHASER SHIRT 85g Men’s M www.patago

The Windchaser is designed for ultrarunning, where comfort and performance have equal importance. It has a slim fit but the clever cut moves with you and you won’t notice the bonded seams. Polygiene odour control keeps it fresh, and reflective details add style and safety. Patagonia manage all this using 100% recycled Bluesign

certified polyester.

MAMMUT MTR 71 T-SHIRT 130g Men’s M

This tee is easily best value; the MTR 71 uses a polyester/elastane mix fabric combined with a good athletic cut, flatlock seams and a dropped tail. It’s a very comfortable tee to run in and has Pure antimicrobial treatment, so it shouldn’t smell. It feels light and breathable to wear and looks good, with four colour choices and reflective logos.

PARAMO CAMBIA SS T-SHIRT 120g Men’s M www.paramo-cloth

Made in Paramo’s Fair Trade Miquelina Foundation factory in Columbia, the Cambia tee is reversible, with two different polyester weaves, providing differing rates of cooling. It’s a smart-looking tee but the cut is slim and the sizing’s quite small – great for a baselayer, but go up a size for a looser fit. UK-based Paramo offers a repair

or recycle service.

The Jeopardy is a polyester tee with a short zip, a zipped pocket, reflective detail and vented under-arm panels. It has a slim fit with a slightly dropped tail. It’s good value but not finished as well as some of the other tees on test, with loose stitching and a sharp zip. Dare 2b have a clear ethical code, however, which is excellent to see.

MONTANE SONIC ZIP T-SHIRT 110g Men’s M www.mon

This slim-cut tee uses a denser-weave polyester than most others, which feels less breathable but actually works very well in the heat. The high collar and a UPF of 50+ give good protection from the sun, the fabric wicks well, and the mesh underarms and quarter-zip aid ventilation. It’s good value and includes Polygiene anti

odour treatment.

INOV-8 AT/C BASE SS 65g Men’s M

By far the lightest on test, Inov-8 has designed this 100% polyester tee for racing. It has an athletic cut that feels comfortable when running and, with bold reflective branding, it looks good too. Treated with Polygiene odour control, it wicks well and dries almost instantly. The hem and sleeves are seamless, so they feel smooth and

won’t chafe.

2XU X-VENT TEE 110g Men’s M

The X-Vent tee is all about staying cool. It features two different weaves of polyester to vary the amount of ventilation, and a loose cut to increase airflow. The back panel is an open weave, which vents well unless under a pack. It’s a stylish top, available in four different colours, with reflective detail on both the back and front.

OMM GRID TEE SS 135g Men’s M

This slim-cut tee has a quarter-zipped collar, mesh venting panels and a dropped tail. It’s made from a 50/50 polyester/ bamboo mix, which feels soft against skin and reduces the amount of plastic used. It wicks well and feels more breathable than 100% polyester. Contour-inspired graphics look good, and the logos are reflective, to keep you safe.

Salewa has used the new Bluesign-approved Polartec Delta fabric to create a brilliant trail running tee. The polyester, lyocell (wood pulp) and elastane mix fabric has a 3D structure, which promotes wicking and stops it feeling wet on the skin. It also holds its shape under rucksack straps, allowing airflow. It has a long athletic cut and looks fantastic.
