Take the lead

Trail Running (UK) - - Training Tweaks -

Man’s best friend? True, but also man’s best training partner. Walking your dog is a fitness boost in itself, but you can upgrade Fido’s playtime to better serve your own exercise regime.

Simple as it may be, running with your hound across parkland provides great motivation for your running and combines two activities, thus saving you time. Plus, you’ll likely run much further than you otherwise would – to stop your dog chasing sheep, if nothing else. Throwing a ball for your dog only works if they bring it back, true, but once you’ve got that sorted it opens up a new possibility for upperbody training. After 10 reps on each arm in quick succession, you’ll feel the effects.

Canicross is the new social way to exercise with your dog – you’ll meet up with other runners to train together, using specially designed hands-free harnesses to control your hound without getting tangled in leads.
