MARATHON DES SABLES: WHAT TO CARRY

Trail Running (UK) - - Big Interview -

Tom succeeded in getting his backpack down to the minimum 6.5kg for the Marathon des Sables. It’s a self-supported race, so aside from being supplied with water and your tent, he carried everything:

■ Food supplies for six days: freeze-dried porridge, nuts, gels, bars and freeze-dried chicken tikka meals (weighing around 3.2kg) ■ Sleeping bag ■ Map ■ Emergency medical kit – foot tape, blister plasters, elastic tape ■ Compulsory items: anti-venom pump, signaling mirror, compass ■ Toothbrush and toothpaste. Tom says: “One of very few luxury items because I couldn’t go a week without brushing my teeth.” ■ Spare socks. “I had to swap them because one of my tentmates’ had worn a hole through theirs.”
