Trekking poles are generally made from metal alloy tubing. To save weight some tubing is thinner but this may make them bendier, which in turn can make them less stable and secure, particularly on uneven ground. Some lighter poles are made with carbon composite materials. These are generally fine but, if over-stressed, can shatter rather than bend.
